Cascade Conference openers on tap for Evergreen women’s hoop
COMING UP: at home vs. Western Baptist College, Friday, December 14, 7:30 p.m.; at home vs. Southern Oregon University, Saturday, December 15, 5:30 p.m.
PENDERGRASS IS A GREENER: Evergreen expects a huge boost this week with the addition to the active list of 6-0 post player Christine Pendergrass, who gains her eligibility with the end of the fall quarter and will play for the first time in a Geoduck uniform Saturday night against Southern Oregon. A junior from Lakewood, Pendergrass played for South Puget Sound Community College’s outstanding team of a year ago and should provide both inside strength and mature leadership. She attended Lakes High School.
GEODUCKS BEST HAND IS TWO PAIRS: Evergreen has two sets of “twin transfers” on its roster: Chandra Rathke and Kristen Zompetti from Highline Community College and Belqui Guardado and LaTyia Williams from the now-defunct NAIA program at California’s Patten College. Those four players have accounted for the leading scorer in all but one of the Geoducks 11 games. Rathke and Guardado have each led the team in scoring three times apiece while Williams and Zompetti have had high honors twice each. Senior Linnea Jablonski is the only other player to have led a game in scoring.
THERE’S ROOM AT THE TOP: Although the Geoducks are 1-10 in nonconference play, they have plenty of hope as Cascade play arrives. With the entire roster available at once for the first time, Evergreen finds itself in a league where the four teams with the least-successful nonconference records have combined for five victories, a couple of those against each other in tournaments. Six teams make the Cascade playoffs come February so, even if the five teams with the best nonconference records hang onto their current positions in league play, one of the teams currently struggling will reach post-season.
ABOUT WESTERN BAPTIST: The Warriors are 6-5 thus far after winning the CCC tournament a year ago to reach the NAIA Nationals. They come into the Evergreen game on a two-game win streak, having beaten Linfield and Lewis and Clark. In L&C, Cascade and Pacific, Western has wins over teams that have beaten the Geoducks. However, the teams share losses to Northwest, Seattle Pacific, George Fox and Pacific Lutheran. 5-6 guard Tati Gallardo leads the Warriors in scoring at 11.2 ppg. Kristi Born, a 5-7 sophomore from Tumwater’s Black Hills High, is averaging 5.1 points and is second on WBC in assists with a total of 29.
ABOUT SOUTHERN OREGON: The Raiders are 3-3 without a cheap loss in the bunch. NCAA D-IIs Chico State and Western Oregon, along with perennial NAIA National Tournament participant Holy Names have defeated SOU, which conversely holds victories over NCAA IIs Saint Martin’s and Humboldt State. Sara Marks, a 5-5 junior guard, leads SOU in scoring at 16.5 ppg. Tara Murphy, a 5-10 senior from Olympia High and SPSCC, has seen brief action in each of the Raiders’ games and is averaging 2.4 ppg.
FREE HOOPS: Saturday’s 5:30 p.m. game with Southern Oregon will be Free Admission Night at Evergreen. The usual admission prices of $5 for adults, $3 for Senior Citizens and $1 for youngsters 17&under will be in place for Friday’s matchup with Western Baptist.

Capital Cup III clash with rival Saints up next for Evergreen men
COMING UP: vs. Saint Martin’s College in Lacey, Saturday, December 15, 8:00 p.m. RADIO: KVSN 1340-AM. Pre-game show 7:45. Play-by-play with Gary Hill and Jeff Lucero.
TOUGH SCHEDULE CONTINUES: When Evergreen travels the 10 miles to Lacey to take on Saint Martin’s in one of the Northwest’s most heated rivalries, the Geoducks will be continuing with what they started way back on November 9 – a schedule that has seen Evergreen play “up” nearly every night. Only one opponent, Westminster College, among Evergreen’s first eight foes, will have been an NAIA Division II team. One, the University of Montana, was NCAA Division I. Four, Alaska-Fairbanks, Seattle University, Western Washington University and Saint Martin’s will have been NCAA II and Lewis-Clark State is NAIA I. Simon Fraser, a former NAIA I member, now competes in the Canada Intercollegiate Athletic Union in men’s basketball.
NO MYSTERY TO THE LINEUP CARD: Evergreen has started the same five players in each of its games. Possible starters for the Capital Cup game for both sides are: Evergreen (Ht./Yr./Hometown/PPG) Pos. Saint Martin’s Ht./Yr./Hometown/PPG) #41 Abel Koeltzow (6-4/SR/Westminster, CO/2.9) F #23 Jerrel Everson (6-2/SO/Spanaway/5.0) #3 Mike Parker (6-6/JR/Lakewood/15.1) F #33 Gerrit Eades (6-8/SR/Bend, OR/13.8) #33 Will McGill (6-3/SR/Heidelburg,MS/10.0) C #45 Nick Gibbs (6-10/JR/Gresham, OR/6.9) #3 Andre Stewart (6-4/SR/Renton/15.9) G #31 Jarel Cherry (6-1/JR/San Diego/8.2) #24 Greg Johnson (6-2/SR/Fairbun, O/9.0) G #21 Howard Bellamy (6-1/JR/Anchorage, AK/7.0)
HOW THEY’VE FARED: Evergreen is 4-4 with three wins over teams in Saint Martin’s conference, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, two on the road at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and one over Seattle University at home. The Geoducks remaining win came over Simon Fraser at home. They lost to D-I Montana by three after leading by as many as 13, including a one-point edge with 50 seconds to go. Saint Martin’s is 1-7 after playing a variety of extremely tough NCAA I and II competition. The teams have one common opponent, Western Washington, which beat them both: The Vikings downed Evergreen 93-79 and came back five days later to defeat the Saints 78-53.
THE CAPITAL CUP SERIES: This will be only the third time the teams have played for the right to hold onto the Capital Cup trophy for the year. Saint Martin’s has the Cup going into Saturday’s game by virtue of a 75-72 win over the Geoducks a year ago at Evergreen. Evergreen holds the overall edge in the series, 4 games to 2, going back to when the teams played two Pacific Northwest Athletic Conference games per season. The Geoducks last won in the first designated Capital Cup clash, 63-61 at the Pavilion in 2000.
BEFORE THE GAME: As always, a number of events for Alumni are scheduled around the Capital Cup contest. A reception will be held in the Worthington Center at 6:30, with door prizes. At 7:00 p.m., President David Spangler of Saint Martin’s and President Les Purce of Evergreen will speak. Following the game, Saint Martin’s will either parade the Cup or hand it over to Evergreen, if the Geoducks win
