Zompetti’s return to form helps Geoduck women snap 12-game skid

OLYMPIA – Kristin Zompetti returned from a long absence caused by a shoulder injury Saturday night. Sunday afternoon, The Evergreen State College women’s basketball team snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 75-34 nonconference victory over visiting Walla Walla College.

The two events are not unrelated. Before suffering the injury, Zompetti had twice led the Geoducks (2-20) in scoring and did so again Sunday, making 10 of 14 shots, including 2-of-4 three-point attempts, to finish with a game-high 22 points. Evergreen’s starting big players also had quality offensive performances as 6-1 senior Linnaea Jablonski scored 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting and 6-0 freshman LaTyia Williams scored 12 on 6-for-11 shooting.

Williams also led the Geoducks in rebounding with eight while Jablonski extended her school blocked shots record for a career to 83 with five in the contest. Evergreen’s team total of 13 blocked shots broke the school record of eight set at Seattle University a year ago. Chandra Rathke contributed five blocks to that total and also scored 12 points.

Jillian Haynal was the lone Walla Walla player in double figures with 10 as Evergreen held the Wolves (4-17) to a miniscule 18.8 shooting percentage from the field.

The Geoducks return home on Friday night, January 25, to meet Cascade Conference leader Eastern Oregon at 7:30 p.m.

Big win over OIT lifts Evergreen to 9th in NAIA basketball rankings

A 25-point thumping of its closest pursuer in the Cascade Conference standings was enough to lift The Evergreen State College men’s basketball team to ninth in the NAIA National Rankings released Tuesday afternoon.

The Geoducks (16-5) were ranked 11th a week ago, before winning three games, culminating with an 87-62 victory over then 14th-ranked Oregon Tech. The win was Evergreen’s 11th in a row overall and gave the Geoducks (10-1 in conference) a two and one-half game lead in the CCC over now 17th-ranked Tech and 24th-ranked Western Baptist College, who share a 7-3 league mark.
Evergreen is the highest ranked team in the West, as the lone California Pacific Conference team in the poll, Dominican University, was 25th.

Friday, the Geoducks travel to Idaho to take on Albertson College (16-8, 6-4), which was among the honorable mentions in this week’s NAIA rankings. Saturday, Evergreen will move on to LaGrande to face Eastern Oregon (4-13, 1-9).
