Women Clams Loaded for Next Year
The pieces necessary to build a high caliber NAIA women's basketball team continue to fall in place for the Evergreen State College Women's Basketball program. This week head coach Monica Heuer, who is entering her third season at the helm of the Geoducks, announced the singing of three premier players, Shakira Rule (Sacramento City College / Sacramento, Calif.), Liz Rizza (South Eugene High School / Eugene, Ore.) and Jenny Olson (Deer Park High School / Washington). "The summer has just begun and I am already excited about this coming season," said coach Heuer. "This year recruiting class will be a good fit with our returning veterans."

Women's Soccer Ready for '03 Campaign
The success that The Evergreen State College Women's Soccer team had in 2002, outscoring opponents 61 to 46, ranked 5th in NAIA Division I ranking for three consecutive weeks in October, looks to be just a taste of things to come. Head Coach Arlene McMahon, returning for her seventh season, announced that the 2003 team will be made up of eight returning players, two transfers, six freshman and three players who did not play last season. The eight returners for the 2003 season are: 1st-Team Cascade Conference forward Tiffany Fenster (junior), 2nd-Team Cascade Conference defender Amanda Grayum, goalkeeper Sara Hart (junior), midfielder Celeste Holz-Schietinger (junior), midfielder Jackie Schindwein (senior), midfielder Heather Gordon (junior), midfielder Vanessa Charles (senior), and defender Leah Humphries (junior). Last season's All-Region and 1st-Team Cascade Conference midfielder A.J. Fairburn (senior) will redshirt the 2003 season.


Wallman Wins L&E Bottling Scholarship
Sara Wallman, a junior women's basketball player, will be the 2003-04 recipient of the L&E Bottling Scholarship, The Evergreen State College Athletic Department announced this week. The $500 award is given annually to an Evergreen student-athlete who was not the recipient of an athletic tuition waiver the previous year with funding provided by L&E, the local Pepsi distributor in Thurston County. Men's basketball player Allen Thomas received the award for the 2002-03 season.
